Tom wants new film for his camera, but when he asks his father for pocket money, Peter gets cross and shoos him away. When Jane voices her concern that they are in financial trouble, her husband admits that the recent lack of sales has put pressure on his antique business. Deciding to do something about it, Jane gets a job interview as a nurse at St Mark’s Hospital. Meanwhile, Peter receives a visit from a potential buyer named Heathcote Oliver Small, who inveigles himself in for tea and cake; but instead of buying, Heathcote is really there to sell his antique portrait of local historian Lord Frisby, which he persuades Peter into buying. Peter is pleased with his purchase, hoping to resell the old painting for a profit. However, when Nobody sees the picture he instantly spots it as a fake, having seen the real portrait when he was once reprimanded by Lord Frisby for scrumping apples on his estate. But how can Tom and Gilly tell their father that he has spent the last of his business’ money on a forgery?
